Something strange happened to smartphones this year

For a while, it seemed like he had no choice when it came to buying a new smartphone. Instead, there were some capable devices that didn't quite shine. But in 2023 something unexpected, a little strange and very happy happened.

We still see the same types of devices, but not only have quality and performance improved dramatically, manufacturers have also managed to differentiate themselves from each other. So, even if one model does not suit us, another model, a very similar device, may be exactly what we are looking for.

Motorola Razr Plus and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 case screens are a difficult process to describe. Motorola Razr Plus (left) and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Prakhar Khanna / Digital Trends

It's hard to explain, so let me give you an example. At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr Plus (or Razr 40 Ultra if you live in the UK) are very similar phones. Both are compact foldable smartphones, weigh about the same, have similar dimensions and cost the same. But each has its own charm, and if one goes wrong, the other is likely to.

From the selection of colors, including the stunning Pantone color Viva Magenta, to the ever-cute Moo character on the cover screen, the Razr Plus is a fun phone. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a more reasonable and sophisticated design, giving it an elegant feel. However, it feels less tactile and draws less attention than the Razr. If you care about apps on the cover screen, the Motorola Razr Plus makes it easy, but the Z Flip 5 requires a bit more effort. If you want faster software updates, go for a Samsung phone. The thing is, both are good phones to buy. Neither is better or worse than the other, so it's impossible to make an automatic, easy "buy" recommendation. Instead, you can buy one and be very happy with your choice.

Instead of simply flipping a coin, you can make your decision based on how each manufacturer has put effort into giving each phone a unique personality and how the phone fits and enhances the user's life. The difference may not be noticeable at first glance, but that's a good thing. Because it means it hasn't lost its overall appeal and hasn't resorted to unnecessary and distracting gimmicks.

Foldable devices, mobile phones, rings and smartwatches such as the OnePlus Open and Google Pixel Fold feature models. OnePlus Open (left) and Google Pixel Fold Christine Romerochan / Digital Trends

Are you starting to see what I mean? Let's look at some examples to see how this trend has developed over the past year.

When we started in 2023, there was only one large-screen foldable smartphone in the United States. It was the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Now we have reached the end and we have three smartphones - Galaxy Z Fold 5, Google Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open. They're not that different in terms of design, but there are enough differences between the two (stability, cameras, software, etc.) that it's easier to understand. It's not just a foldable product. If you have around $500 to spend, you can go for phones like the Nothing Phone 2, Samsung Galaxy A54, Google Pixel 7a, Motorola Edge (2023) and Asus Zenfone 10. Each phone has its own key selling points, which, combined with other small but important differences, make one phone likely to have more features that you'll personally choose over the other. But in the end, if you can afford one, you can get the rest for less, and they're all very good phones you'll want to own. Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro and Pixel Watch 2 on a person's wrist. We see this trend in wearables as well. Oura Ring and Ultrahuman Ring Air are both smart rings, but they cost different amounts to own over the long term. The Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic are identically priced, but almost completely different smartwatches in terms of style, software, approach and appeal. So far I've used Android phones as an example, but the same goes for Apple. The iPhone 15 Plus is significantly different from the iPhone 15 Pro Max, despite being the largest iPhone model with the same screen size. Unlike last year, the Plus model is a model we highly recommend purchasing. The same goes for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, there are distinct differences between the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max that can make your buying decision easier. For a long time, we've had a lot of different smartphones to buy, but when it comes to deals, there's usually a clear winner. It's not that the competition or the alternatives are bad, but it's a matter of counting the compromises they make in terms of design, functionality, software and price, and deciding whether you can live with them. This year, the options have expanded, with almost every device being good and with very few compromises, which has narrowed the gap between devices significantly.

Normally this makes the decision difficult, but the best part is that you are not faced with a sea of smartphones and mobile devices, trying to tell them apart from each other, but everything sounds very good. They are all basically the same. We pay more attention to our products by carefully and thoughtfully applying their unique selling points to create products with a truly personal appeal. There are far fewer gimmicks used to hide potential deals and more devices that differentiate you from the competition in a positive, useful and interesting way.

In 2023, it will be much harder to make a "wrong" choice when it comes to mobile devices. This is because manufacturers have worked hard to give their devices unique and individual features without compromising the basic and universal appeal of their products. This trend has allowed us to create both great products and personal choices, and we hope it will continue into 2024 and beyond.
