Whenever I talk about gaming this year with a friend, colleague, or anyone in the gaming industry, I usually hear one thing. I still don't understand. The conversation went like this: What about Diablo IV? Not yet. Starfield? Save it for Thanksgiving week. Well, I guess you missed Kingdom Tears, didn't you? I downloaded it later because I was only 30 hours into Baldur's Gate 3. sigh. The gaming world has its share of both good (too much to play!) and bad (not enough time to play). But the brave players at Esquire did their best to defeat as many players as possible. This includes, but is not limited to, picking a dick in Baldur's Gate 3, poisoning your love for Madden's franchise mode, floating like Ricky Bobby in Gran Turismo 7 VR, and trying to exercise while working out. Alan Wake II

If you're an Alan Wake fanatic, I'm sorry. But I'd take this list with a Rudy-esque climb. In 2010, Remedy debuted with Alan Wake. This is a horror game about a famous but very depressing mystery writer whose life takes a supernatural turn during a walk (like encountering a Stephen King story). His superpower? write. What about his gun? Guns and flashlights. This person is not a strong snake. Based on a brilliant, surprising and meticulously written story, Alan Wake was instantly memorable, but not commercially successful enough to warrant a sequel. It's faded into the memory of nerds like me who fear that the era of big game studios making something weird and cool and fun is coming to an end.
You know where I'm going with this. In 2021, Remedy released Alan Wake 2. And it's amazing. In fact, I can only think of a few video games that have gotten me interested in the future of media storytelling.
Without going into spoiler territory, let's get right into it. Alan Wake 2 follows Wake and an FBI agent named Saga Anderson. Their stories are intertwined in a truly fascinating and distinctly new way. I'm not sure if there's ever been a game that explores a character's inner self like Alan Wake 2. The gaming world is a living hell, that's for sure. It's a bit disconcerting when the musical starts in the middle of the story or even starts playing with a mysterious naked man wandering through the woods. Did I mention there are tons of live images? The way Alan Wake 2 mixes and matches environments is worthy of its own essay. It's a strange, wild story, and one that will stay with you much longer than you'd like. - Brady Langman
Legend of Zelda tears of the Kingdom
In this year's Game of the Year race, The Legend of Zelda: Tears for the Realm (which debuted almost forever back in May) may seem like the movie that won the Oscar ahead of its peers, but that's not the case. It doesn't look like a shiny new toy by comparison. (See the other four games on this list: Tears of Kingdom debuted at least three months before the others.)
So, should we give the sunflower the gift of "Tears of the Kingdom"? I've written about Masterpiece's achievements, including the additions of Isle of Skye and The Deep, which make the expansive world of its predecessor (Breath of the Wild) even more impressive. We loved how Nintendo dared to combine technologies. Kingdom Tears included aircraft, land vehicles and more. All of this adds a lot to the DIY fun of Breath of the Wild. What hasn't already been said? As a fan of Zonai, what brought Tears of the Kingdom here? Tears of the Kingdom recreates the joy of childhood Breath of the Wild: boundless, pure, fun. This is rarely done in sequels or any other game. There's nothing you can't do in Nintendo's latest Hyrule portrait. For that reason alone, we will never forget the time we spent exploring every corner of this work.
Baldur's Gate 3
As a Dungeons & Dragons novice, a month ago I couldn't tell you anything about necrotic damage, Githianki, or spell slots. I then cleared my schedule to tackle one of the biggest games of the year: Baldur's Gate 3. I threw myself into the fire, quickly learned the rules of rolling the dice, and conquered a goblin camp using a more extensive menu. That's how it was before. I saw But within Baldur's Gate's complex combat system and individual character progression, there's a world of interesting decisions that really matter. In a world where most games tell a predetermined story, helping a city fight enemies or destroying it has real consequences in the future. I can guarantee that if two people play this game, they will have completely different experiences. This is the true choose-your-own-adventure gameplay that every video game promises, but only Baldur's Gate 3 delivers. Everyone you talk to throughout the game, from key companions to random villagers, has a great voice. Heck, even animals! It's another rarity in the world of video games when unimportant bystanders repeat the same cute phrase over and over. Neil Newbone, who voices a rogue vampire named Astarion, gives one of the best performances in a video game I've ever heard. Additionally, in Baldur's Gate 3, you can use druid magic to transform into a giant bear. I can't win. - Josh Rosenberg
Super Mario Bros™ Wonder
Among the great video games released this year are Super Mario Bros. I would recommend this game as a first video game to a younger audience. The idea of entry-level games is something Nintendo does well, and the Mario games are a model for simple, clean level design. Run and jump! I do sports and go karting! easy. But Nintendo wouldn't be a legendary company if they moved Mario from one side of the screen to the other. It's more than that. Super Mario Brothers. The Wonder team had several meetings during the game's development to find ways to remix and update Mario's classic side-scrolling feel. Nintendo came up with dozens of ideas and they all ended up in the game using the new "Wonder Flower" power supply. When you level one of these items, the level changes to the other item. Green pipes move like bugs, piranha plants sing, and Mario turns into an elephant. This is a celebration of Mario's enduring legacy. This is a game that discovers that you have to break all the rules to create something new and exciting. This is magic. — J.R.
When you're born as a little bug in a cocoon world, there's no dialogue to tell you what to do next. Only your curiosity will help you solve the game's creative puzzles without saying a word. Problems will be answered, exploring the environment will open a path forward, and completing game challenges will test your brain. It makes you feel like the smartest person in the world. Created by Danish indie studio Geometric Interactive, Cocoon proves that you don't need a massive open world that lasts 100 hours or more to make a truly great video game.
Like our little bug friends, players usually jump from world to world within a world via small orbs. What you do in one world can help you in another. Plus, Cocoon's abstract design is incredibly colorful and expressive, perfect for when you need to remember which area to move to. It's a rare game that can be completed in one sitting, but it still ranks as high as the other titles on the list. Even if you play as a small insect. What more could you ask for? — J.R.
The best PlayStation Portal consoles and devices
Unlike Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, which are true standalone consoles, PlayStation Portal is useless if you don't own a PlayStation console. It only works on Wi-Fi signals. (Sorry, Bluetooth.) This isn't a $200 portable PlayStation, so be aware of these shortcomings first. However, if you are a PlayStation owner and have some cash to spare, you should use the PlayStation Portal. Because there's no better way to share your TV with your family. Having a problem with your roommate or partner spending more than 10 hours a week behind a screen? It's up to you to decide. It may not be the device for everyone, but PlayStation Portal will keep you relevant. — J.R.

Razer is available to anyone who isn't a PlayStation gamer. Look, is this the revolution promised by Razer? Not. But is this a big step forward for mobile gaming? entirely. Just like on a regular PC, you can download and stream anything you want on Steam. But if you're like me and already love Xbox Game Pass, consider creating your own version of this PlayStation portal. A console you can use on the go. The AMOLED screen is beautiful, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip is powerful enough to run basic titles, despite a minor production hiccup. This is not exactly news. HP's Victus series has been everyone's favorite budget laptop for years. What we appreciate is HP's commitment to offering solid gaming laptops at fair prices. You can get a base model for less than $1,000 and it will handle 75% of the games you want to play for the next five years. If you want to play AAA games on your laptop, the pre-configured "Esports Pro" version allows you to run major titles at maximum settings and costs only $1,200. PlayStation VR2
Yes, the Sony PlayStation VR2 costs $549. Yeah, you probably don't want to pay that kind of money to have a cute doohickey strapped to your face. But these are the gaming awards, and the PlayStation VR2 is the best option. I can only describe the quality of the photos as follows: This is the tall woman from Resident Evil Village. I only peed my pants. The PlayStation VR2 also has a built-in front-facing camera so you can see what's in front of you while determining your location. What about the games? There are two real shows between Resident Evil Village VR and (my personal favorite) Gran Turismo 7 VR. Sony! Just take off the price tag and you'll never take it off again. -B.L

At last year's Gaming Awards, we named Xbox Game Pass the best deal in gaming. That's because for one month's fee you get access to a huge library of old (and new!) titles. With Game Pass Ultimate, you don't even need a console, because the preloaded Samsung Game Hub on your new monitors and TVs can stream Xbox games directly from the cloud. Freestyle 2 is small enough to fit in your handbag, making it practically a console you can put in your pocket. The device is not without defects. Can only be used in low light conditions. Still, this is a big step forward for cloud-based console gaming. - LG

The most interesting thing about gaming headsets is that they are not cross-console compatible. (Bluetooth connections on Xbox and PC are different than PlayStation etc.) If you play on multiple devices, you may need three separate headsets. Logitech G has put an end to this dilemma with the latest Astro model. A50 The box uses its own Bluetooth connection, so you can connect your headphones to three devices at the same time. Easily switch between channels while playing on another device. It's ridiculous that this hasn't been done before, and if you have multiple consoles and headsets, this is the only way to use them together. - LG

It's been a long time since I've seen a truly innovative controller. At least not from the Nintendo Wii nunchucks. Sure, the next-gen controllers will have touch sounds and speakers, but for the most part they work the same. What's the coolest part about the new PowerA controller? The button section is separate from the controller, making it a much smaller portable device that can be used on the go. Apparently PowerA designed it for gamers. Forget all the fancy stuff and give me the button! Honestly, that person is me. I'm glad it exists. — J.R.
XR/AR glasses
VR, AR and now XR? I can already project Pokemon onto my front lawn and put on a headset to transport them into the virtual world. where are we going (Sorry.) XR places the screen on top of what the user is looking at. Want to play a game but don't have a monitor? When you wear these glasses, a screen appears on the wall in front of your eyes. Do you like watching TV while staring at the ceiling? XR glasses also work for this purpose. Eventually, this might be possible with microchips in our brains. Now I have beautiful glasses! — J.R.

Logitech G has launched a new Pro keyboard after a long time. It's affordable, easy to connect, has RGB functionality, and sounds and feels great. Everything we love about Discord this year
Almost all online multiplayer games have become multi-platform. This means Xbox, PlayStation and PC players can play on the same server. We needed a cross-platform communication service. Join Discord - this is an option for almost everyone. The instant messaging-slash-party voice chat platform is an online gathering place for gamers, online communities and everyday traders. The only gripe I had with the game was the lack of console add-ons for the platform. Xbox and PlayStation players had to use separate devices to join groups and send messages. It's coming to Xbox in 2022, and Discord came to PlayStation earlier this year. The three major gaming platforms are now connected in-game and via voice chat. This is the biggest leap forward in cross-platform gaming. The debut of a cross-platform game. - LG

Of course, this is not a gaming product. It's basically an under-desk bike, technically designed for a 9-to-5 job, but I use it as a hamster wheel for gaming. Instead of playing Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty DLC for five hours on Tuesday night, I'm going to sit in this and do a really hard quad workout. Which add! Amps produce electricity. I charge my phone on it. And my laptop. A few times I was able to plug my Xbox controller into it, hit it, and start playing right away. Before I could walk, talk, and wipe my ass, I played Madden's franchise mode. The perfect balm for a lazy Sunday. Why remove mold from your shower floor when it could take a decade (virtual years) to recycle your New York Jets? Do you enjoy spending time with your partner? Ahhh! I'm looking to trade three sixth round picks for fifth round picks starting in 2028. That's my medicine. But like clockwork, every year many Madden fans bemoan this mod and accuse EA of copying the previous year's version into the next. Anything. Ask this passionate GM about Madden's franchise system (get ready for an awkward and slightly inappropriate Taylor Swift reference) Mr. A very good video game experience. Starfield: Standard Edition - Xbox Series
Welcome to a year of 100 hours of gaming fun, whether you're a reader, a gamer, or anything else. Whatever the reason (technological advances, environmental evolution, ambitious narratives, or all of the above), 2023 was the year video games took up all of your time, for better or for worse. It takes about 40 hours to watch the entire sequence, and Baldur's Gate 3 takes about 104 hours to reach 100% (read: bang, end and end). Add giants like Hogwarts: Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, and Kingdom Tears to the mix, and we can safely say that it's officially impossible for the 14+ year old industry to keep up. Sorry Old Man - B.L
Baldur's Gate 3
2023 was the year video games introduced truly unstable character creation systems. Street Fighter 6 lets you become a guy with toothpick legs and big hands. Maybe the opposite of a human T-Rex with useless arms and hips. Starfield has so many face texture sliders that your chin goes past your nose. LeBron James' appearance in NBA 2K24 is so realistic that anyone would be convinced they are watching a real Lakers game. The same goes for Baldur's Gate 3, where you have a variety of options for genitalia. It's no joke. I'm still not sure if I've taken this too far.
